The big controversy in the vaunted Syracuse Newspaper recently (Front Page coverage even) has to do with driver etiquette during highway construction. Takes our mind off the economy and inflation and our beloved president and even the economic stimulant.Â
When you have a construction sign on a 4-lane highway that says something like “Single Lane 1 Mile” do you form a single lane immediately, or stay in 2 lanes for the next mile, and then merge? And if you do merge right now, do you try to block those who wish to merge down the road? I mean really! I do not commute anymore, but sometimes am forced to be out on Route 690 during the Crazy Hour, so I know something about this issue firsthand. And have you ever noticed that after you get thru the merging area and are actually restricted to one lane, traffic flows along smooth as can be? No delays there.Â
Perhaps I can clear up some confusion: If that sign read “Stop 1 mile ahead” would one slam on the brakes immediately? If that sign read “Exit 1 mile ahead, would one drive off the road right here? See what I mean? Of course, if the sign did say “exit 1 mile ahead, it might be prudent to start merging right, instead of waiting until one reaches the exit and crossing 4 lanes at 75 mph, but that is another story. LET’S JUST USE OUR HEADS, PEOPLE!
Wandering the Tug (Tug Hill) 
Here’s a followup note. I just took a ride up Interstate Route 81 to the Watertown area-lots of summer traffic. There were a couple of places where construction restricted traffic to one lane. Interesting that everyone seemed to be able to merge at 55 (or more) mph and move right along with no delays. No one stopped when they saw a sign telling them to merge. Of course, traffic was much lighter than the daily Syracuse commute. But think about it.

What you published made a lot of sense. However, think on this, what if you wrote a catchier post title? I ain’t suggesting your content isn’t good., however suppose you added a post title that makes people want more? I mean To Merge or Not To Merge???? Wandering the Tug (Tug Hill) is a little boring. You might glance at Yahoo’s front page and note how they create post titles to get viewers interested. You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to grab people excited about what you’ve got to say. In my opinion, it would make your website a little livelier.

Had another incident just south of syracuse last week: 2 lanes of route 81 merged to 1 lane, and rush-hour traffic backed up for over an hour. how is this possible? this is not rocket science: car on right proceeds, then car on left, then car on right, etc, etc, etc…why would this take an hour?

@gohere: to answer your question, no, I have never considered converting to spanish. I am an American, living in the USA, where our national language is American English. I strongly believe that people coming to another country should learn that country’s language, not the reverse. I strongly oppose the current trend of all stores and government offices printing all instructions in spanish. helpful, yes, but how do we expect new citizens to ever learn our language? I have spent some time in other countries, and very few have menus and traffic signs printed in english. One must learn THEIR language or ask for help,and often those who speak you language will pretend not to know.

I still get messages daily that my blog will not operate properly on their ipod or blackberry or google or whatever. I am truly sorry about this, but just get over it! I offered to have folks send their blueberry to me and perhaps I could fix it, but no one has responded. All I can suggest is that one take the problem to wordpress or whoever one buys his browser from. All I do is write what I think and offer it up free of charge. Do NOT complain to me.
